JACKSONVILLE, FL – The cumulative number of new coronavirus cases in Duval County rose to more than 40,000 in a Saturday report from the Florida Department of Health, while state officials reported an increase of 42 deaths statewide.
To date, the Department of Health has reported that 18,152 COVID-19 deaths have been recorded in Florida.
Northeast Florida saw a net increase of four deaths. Clay County reported four more deaths from COVID-19 and St. Johns County added one death, while Putnam County recorded an unexplained drop in deaths from 58 to 57 – among the many inconsistencies in the state’s data during the course of the pandemic.
Even when not completely paradoxical, several recent reports contain statistical anomalies. For example, reports the Florida Department of Health Thursday and Friday reported increases of exactly 9,085 new cases and 79 new deaths for residents.
The number of cases across the state in the Saturday report rose to 931,828, an increase of 8,410 compared to Friday’s report.
Confirmed cases in Duval County have increased since the start of the epidemic to 40,369, up 371 from the previous report. Clay County added 78 cases, St. Johns County 71, Nassau County 40, Putnam County 30, Baker County 4.
However, the positivity rate reported by the Florida Department of Health fell to 8.26 percent, the lowest since Nov.7 – though still well above its levels since the beginning of the fall, when that measure mostly stayed between 5 and 6 in Cent.
In reversal of one recent trend, the number of current hospital admissions is falling across Florida per Saturday stats released by the Healthcare Management Agency. As of 4:30 pm Saturday, the agency listed 3,396 patients with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 in hospitals across the state, a decrease of 43 compared to Friday. Even so, statewide hospitalizations are still increasing by nearly 250 compared to last week.
Duval County reported 180 hospitalizations from COVID-19 on Saturday afternoon, unchanged from Friday. Relative to other neighboring counties, those numbers were four for Baker County, four more than on Friday; 41 for Clay County, down by three; Zero for Nassau County, down one; 10 for Putnam County, up two; And 14th in St.John’s County, an increase of 2.
